"Peco Shield"

“Peco Shield”

ORIGINAL SERIGRAPH

This is the most unaltered piece of the shield series. I chose this image of a bird of prey because all throughout the Americas these birds are revered for their majestic flight. They seem to represent an ability to see things from a broader and higher perspective, something that humans often lack, perhaps because we are so close to the ground.

The Peco is one of the few Prehistoric Native American Cultures. They seem to have vanished from the Southwest about 800 years ago. They had no written language, but they left evidence of their existence by a vast amount of pottery of very stylized designs, such as this.
